What causes a shadow?

Learning Target: Students will be able to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to develop an understanding of the patterns of the sun and the moon and the sun’s effect on Earth.
Procedure:
Note: Students have already learned about the Sun and begun learning its effects on Earth and a fixed object on Earth.

- Students discuss in groups what they already know about shadows and what they wonder.
- Students go outside to trace their shadows. They investigate where the shadow moves to at different points in the day.
- Students work with partner to investigate why the shadow appears to move.
- Class discussion after investigation to clarify and explain investigations and findings.
